Exhibition: The Wholesale Markets

This past Tuesday I attended a preview for the latest collection by artist Danny Howes at the Reuben Colley Fine Art Gallery on Colmore Row in Birmingham. Danny’s latest pieces capture moments in time in the soon to be demolished Birmingham wholesale markets which are to be relocated to Witton in Aston. The atmosphere, the essence and character of the markets is brialliantly captured and most importantly the traders who work within it. Scenes of the famous cafe which feeds many of the traders getting their 3am meals, also the banter and bartering between buyers and sellers.
A new wave of development comes to that side of the city i:e more apartments, so Danny's paintings are a stark reminder that landmarks and traditions in my home town are rapidly changing, the cities industrial and social identity is soon to be nothing but a memory.
