Lets get funky

Lets get funky

I wanted to pay a tribute to the artists before me with their wonder paintings I saw at Soul of a Nation, Tate Modern. Beautiful and powerful works from artist such as Carolyn Mims Lawrence and Faith Ringgold to produce my modern day version of black women living in today society. Making a statement about our hair, skin tones and features our beauty should not be judged against colonial standards.  I played around with different techniques and textures to create the final image.

The inspiration behind this artwork came about after spending an afternoon with godfather of British Black photography Vanley Burke at his allotment. I was really stressed out from work so he sat me down, handed me a bottle of cider and we talked about his work, art and he showed me round his allotment, telling me about the different produce he was growing. His kindness calmed my mind and fuelled me to create the two paintings. We all need people in our life to calm our inner soul and release the negative vibes.
